FAQs related to the examination
Answer or Information:

You are entitled to sit the ECVO qualifying examination once all the following requirements have been completed. The requirements are listed below:

  • You have successfully completed an ECVO-approved residency program and have received a letter of approval from the Education and Residency Committee (ERC)
  • You have applied for and received approval from the Credentials Committee (CC) and the Secretary
  • You have paid the credentials applications fee via the Treasurer
  • You have applied via Executive Secretary and the Chair of the Credentials Committee to sit the ECVO qualifying examination
  • You have paid the examination fee via the Treasurer

It is the responsibility of each candidate to observe all deadlines related to the accreditation and examination process. Failure to comply with these deadlines—such as submission of documentation for accommodation requests, the ERC deadline, credentialing deadline, and payment of the exam fee—may result in the candidate being unable to participate in the current examination cycle. In such cases, participation will be deferred until all documentation has been received.

Following application you will receive email notification of your eligibility to sit the examination not later than 1st January of the year of the examination. If you have not received notification by this time, it is your responsibility to contact the ECVO Secretary so that this can be investigated.

The theoretical examination will be held as a remote/decentralised examination during the months of March/April and the dates will be announced at least 10 months in advance.
The practical examination will be held on site at a central location later during the same year. The dates will be announced as early as possible.

Information regarding transport and accommodation options for the examination will usually be supplied to candidates by 2 months prior to the examination. If you have not received such information by 2 months prior to the examination, please contact the Examination Committee chairperson.

The host institution will supply a standard set of diagnostic and examination equipment, including slit-lamp biomicroscope, direct ophthalmoscope, monocular/binocular indirect ophthalmoscope and condensing lens(es). However, candidates are welcome to bring their own equipment if preferred, and will be allowed a short period of time to set-up prior to the clinical examination section.

  • All surgical instruments for the cadaver and ocular surgery must be supplied by the candidate.
  • Candidates must also supply their own suture material, blades, surgical gloves, and head loupes.
  • Surgical drapes and gowns are not required, or will be supplied by the host institution.
  • An operating microscope for the intraocular surgery section and stands/trays for organizing the surgical instruments will be available.

This request is usually dealt with on a case-by-case basis. If you would like such a letter then please contact the Resident Co-ordinator or the Secretary. Please note that provision of such a letter does not guarantee that this equipment will be accepted as hand luggage.

There is no specific set of instruments for the ECVO exam, however you need to be prepared for adnexal, corneal and intraocular surgery.
